Buying the right size air conditioning equipment

Carlton Sales has developed a calculator to help you buy the right size air conditioning equipment for the room that you need it for.

How it came about

It was developed about 25 years ago to reduce the amount of time the office had to spend dealing with general enquiries with customers wanting to know what size of air conditioning equipment they required.  Plus only a Qualified Design Engineer would be able to calculate the size of equipment required, the A/C Calculator allows any of the office staff to use and advise the customers of their requirements.

Further enhancements

The chart has been modified over the years to show the most common rooms requested to be air conditioned and their size in the A/C Calculator.

Where you can find it

The A/C Calculator can be found by clicking on the tab called A/C Calculator which appears under the more information pages on each of the air conditioning products.

Why it is so useful

Customers can order air conditioning equipment online 7 days a week at any time of day without the need to contact the office.  If you are just looking for a budget price you can get an idea of this by using the A/C Calculator.

Multiple uses

The A/C Calculator is there for guidance only as there are so many different applications it can be used for example; comfort cooling or a computer server room.   Each application can vary depending on the size, shape, number of people, number of computers, area of external glass, direction the building is facing, flat roof etc.

Dehumidifiers for home, domestic, commercial or office use.

Does your commercial premise, office or home struggle with any of these problems?

· Condensation

· Unsightly damp patches,

· Mould and mildew

· Dustmites

These are all problems caused by high humidity. Using a good dehumidifier can significantly reduce or even eliminate these problems.

Often it is a lack of effective ventilation in the home or the office which creates high humidity. Modern homes and offices are much better insulated and sealed which is a good thing, but if the ventilation systems are not effective – or non existent – then humidity can become an issue.

Older offices and homes may have solid walls and poor insulation that allow moisture and damp to enter into the premises.

Do you need a dehumidifier?

The air in all offices and homes will contain moisture and this is perfectly natural however moisture in the air becomes a problem when there is too much of it, this leads to condensation developing on windows and walls, mildew and mould thrives in these conditions. If your office or home is struggling with condensation or spreading mould and mildew patches then you will benefit from a dehumidifier.

Dehumidifiers are used to keep humidity levels low to avoid problems with damp and mildew and also to control dust mites which thrive in warm, damp environments. However dust mites can’t live at below 50% humidity. Using air conditioners and dehumidifiers to keep humidity between 40% and 50% is highly recommended. Dehumidifiers will enable you to control your homes’ humidity to the optimum level, without the air becoming too dry.

How do dehumidifiers work?

A dehumidifier draws in air from the room passing it through a filter and over some cold coils similar to the coils in a fridge. The cold coils condense the water from the air. The water is collected within the unit and the air is then reheated to room temperature and blown back out of the dehumidifier. People are often amazed at the amount of water that is extracted from the air in a badly ventilated environment.

If your business or home could benefit from a dehumidifier Carlton Sales can help you to select the right dehumidifier for the task. We supply Commercial dehumidifiers industrial dehumidifiers and domestic or home dehumidifiers . We can also help with installation and maintenance if appropriate. Just give us a call on 01793 512550 and we’d be delighted to advise you.

Don’t be tempted to try and save some costs by not renewing your air-conditioning maintenance contracts.

We Brits love it – talking about the weather – it’s one of our defining traits. But why are we so focussed on the weather? Probable because it’s so unpredictable – but also because we are often so unprepared if ever it becomes that little bit more extreme. Look at the travel chaos this winter when lets be honest just a few inches of snow came down and then wouldn’t melt like it normally does.

It is this unpreparedness that I think has us jumping about when it comes to the weather – and that got me thinking about air-conditioning. Here at Carlton we sell and service many of the leading manufacturers of air conditioning systems e.g. DeLonghi, Fujitsu, Hitachi, LG, Mitsubishi, Toshiba, LG to name just a few. Over the past year we have seen an increase in the number of clients who have air-con units installed but who are not maintaining them correctly.

We have put this down to the recession and the need for companies to try and save costs where they can. Fair enough – we have asked ourselves the same questions here at Carlton – are we paying for anything that we don’t really need? Or that is not bringing real value to our business either in terms of helping us grow revenues, reduce costs or improve our customer service?

So we have seen a fall in the number of air-conditioning maintenance contracts that are being renewed.

However – if you are tempted to cut some costs by not renewing your air-con maintenance contract – think carefully about the consequences. Because we have also seen an increase in the number of companies contacting us with emergency service requests because their air con system has packed up in the recent spells of hot weather that we have enjoyed (only if your air con was working!) and their staff or their industrial processes are suffering badly as a result.

In the longer run what looks like an easy saving can suddenly become a significant cost – not just in terms of having the system fixed out of contract – but also in terms of productivity lost while waiting for the repairs to be made – or the spare parts to arrive.

If you think that the link between air-conditioning and productivity is a tenuous one – let me tell you what the Building Manager of a large financial company told me. This company was concerned at the cost of it’s air-con bill and quietly instructed the Buildings Manager to switch off the air-con in one of their HQ buildings. Over the next few days productivity in that particular building fell dramatically – to the extent that the Building Manager was told to get the system back on a.s.a.p. The cost saving was significantly less than the cost of the lost productivity.

So if your company is thinking it can save a few hundred £’s by not renewing air-con maintenance contracts you really should get them to think again. They may get away with it for a while – but if the air con system does fail all your savings are likely to wiped out and more. Like your computer or your TV – people take air-conditioning for granted until it suddenly isn’t there!

Our Air Conditioning Engineers have been overheating!

Now that it seems like the recent spell of very warm weather has finally come to an end for a while, our air conditioning engineers here at Carlton Services might be able to get back to normal working hours again!

The last few weeks have been extremely busy for us because so many companies suddenly needed air con systems installations or suddenly found that their air conditioning units just packed up. Often when we talked to these organisations they confessed to not having the air con systems on any sort of maintenance contract and therefore they had been regularly serviced.

At Carlton Services just like any other business we fully understand the drive to reduce costs and make savings where possible – but when it comes to maintenance of things like air con units we certainly would not advise reducing costs by scrapping service and maintenance contracts. I’d say this for two main reasons;

1) Because sods law says that your air con system is bound to fail just when you need it most and when it does it will cost you a lot more in emergency repair work and lost productivity ( yes - we have lots of anecdotal evidence gathered over all our years of servicing and repairing air conditioning systems that show us how productivity and efficiency plummets when the temperature rises)

2) Poorly maintained or neglected air conditioning systems can be a breeding ground for bacteria and viruses – some of them extremely nasty – even deadly, like Legionella pneumophilia or legionnaires disease!

For these reasons not maintaining your air conditioning systems effectively could prove to be a very false economy.

New J & E Hall Cellar Cooler Wins Westminster Vote

Chilling wines and cooling beers to perfection for a demanding audience at Westminster is the job facing J & E Hall’s new JCC cellar cooler. Halls recommended a JCC 40 E cellar cooler for a bar within a major government building. For its competitive price and energy efficiency, the JCC cellar cooler received a resounding vote of support from the Skanska Facilities’ Services’ team.
Tony Golding, J & E Halls’ sales and application engineer based at Westerham, Kent, supplied the JCC cooler to Skanska. He said: “The customer was impressed by the price, the energy savings and the fact that the cooler runs on refrigerant R410A. New pipework was installed, following the existing route, the cellar cooler fixed to the wall in the same place and the existing condensing unit replaced. It couldn’t have been easier.
“Everybody was very happy with the outcome. We didn’t get the order until the last week of September. The equipment was installed during the first week of October, so it was commissioned and operational in time for the end of the   summer recess in Westminster.”
JCC cellar coolers from Halls offer:
  • low noise
  • a small footprint
  • are easy to install
  • have accurate temperature control
  • and are energy efficient.

Normal operation of most cellar coolers is around 12oC but the JCC coolers have electronically controlled systems from the indoor unit allowing operation as low as 4oC. As standard, off-cycle defrost is available from the controller to prevent frost formation. The coolers can be wall or ceiling mounted to maximise space. Coils are manufactured with six fins per inch brewery specification for easy maintenance. The low temperature application of the system means that the coolers are also suitable for the fruit, vegetable and floral industries.
