Gamko Refrigeration Update

Further to Gamko joining the world wide ITW group of companies in 2008 and here in the U.K our relocation to Trafford Park, Manchester we would just like to confirm that as always Gamko “in our 51st year” is here to serve you the customer.

The following article is the first of our customer updates that we will be sending out to keep you up to date, we have also included a little history just in case this is your first Gamko experience? Research and production facilities in the Netherlands (Etten-Leur) offer Gamko the flexibility
to build products to the customer’s specification. Various aspects such as design, functionality and dimensions play a major part in this. Up to date production methods warrant that high quality products can be offered at competitive prices with flexible lead times.
“Bar design begins with Gamko” is not only our tag line, for thousands of customers over Gamko’s fifty years of business it is true, with a considerable portfolio of products Gamko has satisfied customer requirements through out the world and with extensiveproduct development lead by customer consultation this is set to continue.
One of Gamko’s biggest strength is its range of products from plug ready to remote back/
front bar through to stainless steel or the new Flexbar applications it is believed that the
possibilities from one manufacture of bar equipment is unrivaled. Our current leading range is Maxiglass with under counter cabinets available from 140 to 315 litres, hinged or sliding doors and standard features that include factory set electronic thermostat, door locks, automatic defrost, chrome plated shelves (two as standard with each cabinet) and a low maintenance condenser ensuring that even in the toughest of environments the appliance will work to its optimum.

With a standard external finish of anthracite (black) and the option of stainless steel on hinged models the benefit of Maxiglass is weather you have a single, double or triple door model, the look, performance and reliability ofthe product does not alter. In addition we have two tall upright models comprising of a single door hinged and a double door hinged and sliding model (300 and 500 litres respectively) again with anthracite or on the hinged models the option of stainless steel external finish. To compliment Maxiglass there is also a two model range of under counter glass frosters, available in stainless steel you have the option of solid or glass door with a
minimum temperature of -21°C. For the quick serve outlet slide top coolers provide the perfect capacity and availability of bottled product with three models in the range from 130 litres (200 x 33cl bottles), 210 litres (315 x 33cl bottles) and 375 litres (560 x 33cl bottles) all with stainless steeltops, you have the option of an anthracite or stainless steel body and with features which includes a separate drain point for internal cleaning and locks, this is truly the complete appliance. As an option, castors are also available to create the ideal satellite serving point.

You may say that to give a customer too much choice can be confusing, however, we would argue that situations can be unique to the customer. Why should they have to accept the take it or leave option or indeed purchase a single and a triple door cabinet that although may be from the same source have only the vehicle that delivered them in common. In addition to the Maxiglass we have Eco-Line, a range of cabinets that offer larger capacity and the option to cool with a remote condenser taking any heat or perceived noise made by the bottle cooler away from the bar area.

Gamko can truly offer the one stop bar solution in addition to bottle coolers, keg coolers can give that value for money option when draft dispense is required without the option of cellar facilities and with counter top refrigerator and freezer coolers where else would you need to look.

We would also like to bring to your attention our latest additions to the range, Flexbar and stainless steel modular front bar systems. Flexbar can offer everything or your choice of what you require to complete a back and front bar that will create a flowing service area, with bottle storage to coffee stations. With coloured LED and central electronic locking among the features this truly is the ultimate in “what the customer wants the customer can have”. Gamko considers that in order to create the perfect bar the front bar serving area has to compliment the back bar display refrigerated sections.

Many manufactures and importers in today’s sales environment seem to base their marketing around free product and offers and not the bottle cooler however, at Gamko we rely on the quality and functionality of our products, with cabinets in excess of fifteen years old and still performing we believe this is a benefit worth shouting about.

New J & E Hall Cellar Cooler Wins Westminster Vote

Chilling wines and cooling beers to perfection for a demanding audience at Westminster is the job facing J & E Hall’s new JCC cellar cooler. Halls recommended a JCC 40 E cellar cooler for a bar within a major government building. For its competitive price and energy efficiency, the JCC cellar cooler received a resounding vote of support from the Skanska Facilities’ Services’ team.
Tony Golding, J & E Halls’ sales and application engineer based at Westerham, Kent, supplied the JCC cooler to Skanska. He said: “The customer was impressed by the price, the energy savings and the fact that the cooler runs on refrigerant R410A. New pipework was installed, following the existing route, the cellar cooler fixed to the wall in the same place and the existing condensing unit replaced. It couldn’t have been easier.
“Everybody was very happy with the outcome. We didn’t get the order until the last week of September. The equipment was installed during the first week of October, so it was commissioned and operational in time for the end of the   summer recess in Westminster.”
JCC cellar coolers from Halls offer:
  • low noise
  • a small footprint
  • are easy to install
  • have accurate temperature control
  • and are energy efficient.

Normal operation of most cellar coolers is around 12oC but the JCC coolers have electronically controlled systems from the indoor unit allowing operation as low as 4oC. As standard, off-cycle defrost is available from the controller to prevent frost formation. The coolers can be wall or ceiling mounted to maximise space. Coils are manufactured with six fins per inch brewery specification for easy maintenance. The low temperature application of the system means that the coolers are also suitable for the fruit, vegetable and floral industries.

Hotel Leaders Call for More Cohesive Promotion of Tourism

Leading Hotel industry figures are calling for a more structured and cohesive outlook to the way the government promotes the UK tourism industry, following a report criticising its management of the sector.
The report, Backing UK Tourism: Destination Recovery report, commissioned by the British Chambers of Commerce (BCC) and Travelodge, states that industry growth is held back by government mis-management even though tourism is the fifth largest sector of the UK economy, currently employing 1.4 million people and generating revenues of £86b.
The report warned that passenger numbers to the UK have declined by 18% between 1997 and 2007 and the industry has the second worst balance of trade tourism deficit in the EU.
Dr Adam Marshall, BCC director of policy, said that while tourism would play a key role in Britain’s future economy, the industry needed better support from government to reach its full potential.
“This is a sector which can rapidly create jobs, even in the current economic conditions, yet it suffers from an extremely confused support structure,” he warned.
In his foreword to the report, David Frost Director General British Chambers of Commerce said, “With unemployment rising and the path to sustainable economic growth still uncertain, the British Chambers of Commerce has been making the argument that we all need to help foster the UK’s recovery. Sectors that have previously driven economic growth, such as construction and financial services, are likely to be considerably weaker in the near future. Other sectors with the potential for growth will need to step into the breach. This report argues that tourism is one of those sectors.
“Britain’s tourism industry deserves the chance to unlock its full potential, and subsequently help drive the economy out of recession. In order to do so, the industry requires a more effective system of targeted support and a co-ordinated effort between government at all levels and the industry itself.”
VisitBritain estimates that by 2018, if managed correctly, tourism could grow into a £113b industry with 164,000 more jobs, emphasising the need for government support but not necessarily extra investment.
The tourism industry is currently co-ordinated by the Department of Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) with 100 public sector bodies operating in ‘isolation without clear co-ordination or vision from the centre’ according to the report.
The Treasury presently allocates £350m annually to support tourism, however, the report found that DCMS only has direct influence over £50m and recommends the responsibility for tourism be given to the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills to guarantee a better co-ordination of funding.

Michelin-starred Sat Bains to open second site

Michelin-starred chef Sat Bains today revealed plans to open a second, more informal, restaurant in Nottingham.

The chef, whose Restaurant Sat Bains on the outskirts of the city picked up the AA’s top accolade of five rosettes on Monday, wants to launch a 12- to14-seat eaterie with a Japanese-style counter cooking and serving food in front of customers.

“It’s going to be based around Japanese techniques and in the style of a tapas bar like Barrafina,” he told Caterersearch. “It’s my favourite way of eating – not high-end, but the food will be outstanding.”

Bains, and his wife and business partner Amanda, are currently in talks with a number of property agents in Nottingham over potential sites in the city centre with a view to opening next year.

Mitsubishi Electric Green Gateway Initiative

Mitsubishi Electric’s Living Environmental Systems (LES) Division (UK) draws a simple conclusion on the current debate surrounding CO2 emissions and sustainability; in the UK we have to fundamentally change the way in which we heat and cool our homes, schools, factories, shops and offices.

In the words of the UK Government’s DEFRA; “Climate change doesn’t discriminate. Whether you’re a business, a Government, or an individual, it is a threat to us all and therefore a challenge for us all.”

If the UK Government is to be supported in meeting its targets for CO2 reduction then we have to accelerate change in ‘heating’ and address ‘cooling’ in a responsible manner. Managing the internal temperatures of the environments in which we live, work and learn has to keep pace with the new technologies that are available and the incremental savings in CO2 that are eminently achievable.

As the UK moves more quickly towards being a low carbon economy the ‘yoyo’ practices of using gas boilers for heating and air conditioning for cooling, is no longer sustainable in light of future legislation and the continued growth of carbon generation.

Using low-carbon technologies and increasing the use of renewable energy to deliver targets for reducing carbon dioxide is what the future holds for every citizen of the UK. To collectively meet this challenge corporations like Mitsubishi Electric LES need to empower individuals to make the right choices.

Whether sourced from fossil fuel, nuclear or renewables – the optimisation of grid electricity is key to the future of any sustainable policy. Mitsubishi Electric LES’ Green Gateway Initiative is focused on 4 distinct sectors and the best use of grid electricity within each:

1. To-be-built Environment Residential
2. The Built Environment Residential
3. To-be-built Environment Commercial
4. The Built Environment Residential

Energy efficient heating and cooling are of prime importance. 40% of Europe’s energy is spent on heating, lighting, cooling and running our homes and offices, and the EU estimates that by 2010 we could save 22% of the energy that is currently being used in buildings. Forecasts show that by 2030 Europe will import 70% of its energy – the UK’s own supply of gas will cease within a relatively short period.

The engrained thinking of using ‘wet systems’ (gas boilers with water heated radiators) for heating needs to be revisited both environmentally and economically. The efficiency of gas boilers pales when compared to that of a heat pump boiler – this technology is readily available today.

Heat pumps are movers of heat energy – they upgrade naturally occurring low temperature heat into useful high temperature heat (and vice versa) to provide cooling.  This technology is already well known in the air conditioning market and in countries such as Sweden and Switzerland, heat pumps are often used as a primary source for heating and hot water. Heat pump technology is very flexible, with excellent energy efficiency and CO2 reduction potential.

When it comes to cooling building environments ‘Free Cooling & Heat Recovery’ strategies are of significant importance. The use of fresh air and natural ventilation when combined with an air conditioning system reduces energy consumption. Re-use of the warm air being expelled from a building to provide heat back into the building is better than warming-up the outside.

The Green Gateway Initiative has been created by Mitsubishi Electric LES. It is the Company’s proactive response to climate change. The point of difference is that Mitsubishi Electric LES will actively use its market footprint to influence people’s buying decisions and help businesses and consumers make the right choices. The Green Gateway Initiative is a formalisation and acceleration of the practices that the Company already employs.

Not to be confused with ‘greenwash’ – it is the ambition of Mitsubishi Electric’s Living Environmental Systems Division to implant change proactively and rapidly. These things are easy to say, but doing is much harder – that’s why Mitsubishi Electric LES has proactively set targets to reduce CO2 emissions both directly itself and indirectly – through the customers that purchase heating and cooling products.

If the principles of the Green Gateway Initiative were adopted across the whole market, the potential savings from the commercial sector would be 148,000 tonnes of CO2 in year one – rising to annual savings of more than one million tonnes of CO2 by 2016.  In the residential sector the opportunities for CO2 savings are more significant - if a heat pump was installed in all new build residential properties and 10% of the gas boilers sold each year in existing properties were replaced with heat pumps, the potential annual saving would be over two million tonnes of CO2 by 2016.

The old adage that “…our first responsibility is to our shareholders…” has now changed. In the carbon generation, every company’s responsibility is to its stakeholders. Stakeholders include the individuals that purchase goods and services from companies and the fellow citizens that are both directly and indirectly affected by those purchasing choices.

Mitsubishi Electric LES’ Green Gateway Initiative is a first for the heating & cooling industry sector. The overall initiative breaks down into 10 component parts:

Initiative 1:  Replace Old Equipment
Initiative 2:  Affect Purchasing Behaviour
Initiative 3:  Heat Pumps for Heating
Initiative 4:  Free Cooling & Heat Recovery
Initiative 5:  Improved Specification & Design
Initiative 6:  Decision Support Tools
Initiative 7:  Installation & System Commissioning
Initiative 8:  Better Maintenance
Initiative 9:  Controls
Initiative 10:  Residential

Some of these initiatives are technological developments and new thinking. Some are simple, behavioural changes. All are focused on creating a significant impact on CO2 reduction.

The Green Gateway Initiative is not definitive – it represents a first proactive push and a significant statement of intent.

Sirman Redefines Contact Grilling

New Paninonstick grill offers ‘everlasting’ non-stick cooking for easy cleaning and long life

The contact or sandwich grill continues to grow in popularity. And little wonder; it’s a quick, simple and healthy way of cooking a whole range of inexpensive but high-profit snacks, such as paninis and toasted sandwiches.

Now Carlton Sales has launched the Paninonstick from Sirman, a contact grill design that overcomes some of the biggest drawbacks with conventional grills.

Sirman’s Paninonstick models are aimed directly at professional caterers who need long-term reliability as well as excellent cooking results. They feature a ’super coating’ of non-stick ceramic material that not only is very easy to clean after cooking, but is extremely tough and long-lasting. It won’t chip or peel, and should last as long as the unit itself. The grills are available in both single and double versions.

In addition, Paninonstick contact grills have been built to take the punishment meted out by fast, busy chefs. The grill plates are ribbed and made of cast iron for long life. This, together with the ceramic coating, makes it resistant to the acids and salt in food as well as oxidation (rust) that can affect lesser models. It also gives very high thermal conductivity, making it fast and efficient in turning power into actual cooking heat.

The body of the grill uses a stainless steel construction, while the upper plates are self-balancing at any angle. The double version has two discrete thermostats, allowing items to be cooked at different temperatures at the same time, and both single and double models have a built-in timer/alarm

Sirman, the Italian brand of professional foodservice equipment, is distributed in the UK and Ireland by Carlton Sales. In addition to contact grills the full Sirman range includes slicing machines, food processors, panini grills, vegetable preparation equipment, blast chillers, stick blenders and induction hobs.
