Samsung Air Conditioning Training Centre Opened

SAMSUNG’s first UK training centre has been opened in Mansfield by ac sales and marketing specialist Gallant Air Conditioning.

Senior management from the Korea-based manufacturer, including European White Goods manager Brian Kim, attended the opening with Gallant’s managing director Ted Berry.

Kim said “This training centre is an essential part of our strategy to become a market leader in the UK air conditioning industry.

He added: “To be successful, you must provide good technical service and comprehensive training. Our technology can produce some of the best energy efficiency results available in the global air conditioning field, however, it must be installed properly to deliver those results and avoid shortened operating lifecycles”.

Samsung has set up distribution agreements with a number of wholesalers while entering into a sales, technical and CRM support partnership with Gallant.

There is already a waiting list of contractors looking to use the Mansfield facilities and Gallant has plans to grow the training centre to include delivery of the City & Guilds 2079 refrigerant handling qualification that all members of the industry must achieve by 2011.

“The centre is a great resource for us”, said Samsung national sales manager Jon Pettitt. “We have a special relationship with Gallant and they offer us something that other companies in the industry cannot, such as excellent technical and CRM support”, he added.

Samsung described the Mansfield site as ideal as it is close to the centre of the country and within easy distance of the motorway and rail network.

Classeq Issues Advice On Washing Polycarbonate Glasses

‘Unbreakable glasses’ are suddenly a talking point. But there’s a light-year of difference between the cheapest disposable ‘plastic’ glasses and the more elegant polycarbonate versions, which are now a serious rival to glass as a drinking container.

Whether you love or hate them, more and more bars and pubs are turning to polycarbonates for serving drinks, whether inside for security or outside in public areas for safety.

Or simply for convenience and cost, because ‘polycarbs’ can eliminate breakage costs and can be handled and stacked more easily when empty. They are popular in pub gardens or village greens where children might be playing, and their natural insulating properties mean they can keep cold drinks colder for longer than in ‘real’ glasses.

“Modern polycarbs are much clearer and more ‘glass-like’ than in earlier years, and apart from their lightness it’s sometimes hard to tell them apart from real glass,” says Nick Burridge, sales director of Classeq, the specialist UK manufacturer of commercial glass washers.

“Drinkers are now more aware they are reusable and washable, not ‘recyclable’ or ‘disposable’. And they can be cheaper and more environmentally friendly too.”

However, many pubs and bars are still confused about how to handle them, he says. As one of the UK’s biggest suppliers of undercounter glass washers to the licensed trade, Classeq is closely watching the trend.

But while they won’t shatter like glass - and thus are safer and can have a longer life - they require more careful treatment to avoid a buildup of scratches, and never more carefully than when being washed.

“They can be washed in the same glass washing machines as standard glassware, and you can use the same detergents, rinse aid and dosing levels,” assures Burridge.  “You also don’t need any special accessories. However, for best results you shouldn’t mix polycarbonates and glasses in the same wash.”

“You should also ensure they are washed up quickly after use and don’t have drinks left in them overnight. Unlike glass they can absorb the strong smells in spirits like Pernod or ouzo.”

“Perhaps the biggest difference is that they’ll take longer to dry naturally after removing from the basket, unless you wipe them dry.

“On the plus side, they cool down more quickly. This can be very handy during hot weather in busy bars, when they might have to be washed and reused quickly.”

Hotels To Benefit From Decade Of Sports Events

The announcement in July that England had won the right to stage the 2015 Rugby World Cup was the latest development in what is being dubbed by spectators as the UK’s “golden decade of sport”.

The event stands to bring in an estimated £2.1b to the British economy, according to an independent Deloitte report and, of course, the hospitality industry, especially hotels, stands to take a slice of the pie.

James Berresford, chief executive of VisitEngland, said the announcement was a great boost for our “sports mad nation”.

“Events are a big driver for tourism in England,” he said. “With the 2012 London Olympic and Paralympic Games looming, followed by the 2015 Rugby World Cup and our hopes for a successful 2018 FIFA World Cup bid, England will be placed firmly on the sporting world stage for many years to come. The future is looking very bright indeed.”

Previous international sporting events, such as the 2007 Rugby World Cup which was held in France, give an indication as to how much England stands to gain from hosting another world-class championship. Parisian hoteliers achieved more than 50% extra profit in October 2007 compared with the same month in the previous year, according to TRI Hospitality Consulting’s HotStats database of hotel operating performance.

Deloitte, meanwhile, confirmed that revenue per available room (revpar) was up 5.8% during the month of June across South Africa as hoteliers benefited from an increase in tourism thanks to the FIFA Confederations Cup and the Lions rugby tour. In July 2006, Berlin managed to double its revpar with a staggering 101.6% rise, when Germany hosted the FIFA World Cup.

And, although the Rugby World Cup does not attract a following on the same scale as football, hospitality operators still stand to gain from the event. Jonathan Langston, managing director of TRI Hospitality Consulting, said: “As with any major sporting event, hosting the Rugby World Cup in 2015 will be good news for the hoteliers in match locations. But given that it is not as much of a draw as football, the anticipation of high levels of demand will not be the same as for the German hoteliers for the FIFA World Cup.”

Langston added that it was unlikely that hotels would keep rooms free in the expectation of large crowds arriving into a destination. “We can expect them to apply sound yield management policies, but the allocation of rooms on a large volume scale by the clubs and associations, as happens with football, is unlikely to be a feature,” he said.

Marvin Rust, hospitality managing partner at Deloitte, also warned hoteliers not to overcharge during the event. “The key thing to learn from previous events is for hoteliers not to overprice rooms,” he said. “Hoteliers have got it wrong before where they were left with empty rooms which they then had to dump very cheaply at the last minute. Proper management of room stock will be key.

“But,” Rust added, “as the event will be held across the whole of England, it looks to be a pretty good party all round.”
